This seventh volume gathers Suárez’s Defensio Fidei Catholicae (Defense of the Catholic Faith), a major scholastic and political-theological work written in response to early modern challenges to Catholic doctrine and ecclesiastical authority. It reflects Suárez’s mature synthesis of metaphysics, theology, and political philosophy.
The work primarily defends the legitimacy of Catholic teaching on the nature of ecclesiastical power, the authority of the Church, and the limits of civil sovereignty in spiritual matters. Suárez argues for the distinction between temporal and spiritual authority while maintaining the superiority of the spiritual order in matters pertaining to salvation.
A significant portion is devoted to questions of political legitimacy, including the origin of civil authority, the rights and duties of rulers, and the conditions under which resistance to unjust authority may be considered. These discussions are grounded in natural law theory and a carefully developed account of society as ordered toward the common good.
Throughout the volume, Suárez combines rigorous scholastic reasoning with polemical clarity, defending Catholic doctrine against Protestant and absolutist interpretations of authority. The result is a foundational text in both Catholic political theology and early modern legal philosophy, rooted in the broader scholastic tradition.
