Scholastic Theology on the First Part of Thomas Aquinas presents Francisco de Lugo's treatment of the foundational questions of sacred theology, following the order of the First Part of the Summa Theologiae of Aquinas. Published in Lyon in 1647 and appearing for the first time in print, the work covers three interconnected books in a single volume.
The first book treats God in himself, examining the divine nature, attributes, and existence as known through reason and faith, following the Thomistic metaphysical account of God as pure act and subsistent being itself.
The second book turns to the mystery of the Trinity, analyzing the processions, relations, and persons of the Godhead in light of both Scripture and the scholastic tradition, engaging the theological controversies of the schools on the eternal generation of the Son and the procession of the Holy Spirit.
The third book examines the Angels, their nature, knowledge, will, and mission, treating them as pure intellectual substances and situating their place within the created order as understood in the Thomistic tradition.
Throughout the work De Lugo maintains the rigorous disputational style of Jesuit scholasticism, engaging Aquinas directly while also drawing on the wider tradition of commentators. The work stands as a significant contribution to the flowering of scholastic theology in the Society of Jesus during the seventeenth century.
