This first volume of Hugon’s Dogmatic Treatise presents a systematic exposition of fundamental Catholic doctrine in a Thomistic framework. It begins with the mystery of the one God in His unity of essence and proceeds to the doctrine of the Trinity, articulated according to the scholastic tradition of Thomas Aquinas.
Hugon carefully explains the divine nature as absolutely simple, infinite, and subsistent being itself, before moving to the distinction of persons within the Trinity through relations of origin—paternity, filiation, and spiration—while preserving absolute unity of essence. The treatment is marked by clarity and fidelity to classical Thomistic metaphysics.
The work then turns to God as Creator and ruler of all things, outlining divine causality and providence as the ordering principles of the created universe. Hugon presents creation as a free act of God, sustaining all beings in existence and directing them toward their proper ends.
A substantial section is devoted to angelology, treating angels as pure spiritual substances with intellect and will, followed by an introduction to human nature as a composite of body and rational soul.
Throughout, Hugon maintains a structured and pedagogical approach, aiming to present dogmatic theology as a coherent, rationally articulated system grounded in metaphysical principles and ordered toward the understanding of divine revelation.
